Joe owns a huge stable. In it are cows and chickens. Bob and Joe go in and count all the heads and feet in the stable. The totals are: 200 feet and 66 heads. How many chickens are there? The solution is below.
Since Bob and Joe are humans, and they counted ALL the feet, theirs don't count. 200 feet - 4 feet (2 from Joe and 2 from Bob) = 196 feet
66-2=64
So the new figures are 196 and 64.
Since there are four cow feet per cow and two per chicken, and there are x cows and y chickens,
4x + 2y = 196
and because of the heads,
x + y = 64
Multiply the head equation buy -2:
-2x - 2y = -128
Use the addition method:
4x + 2y = 196
-2x - 2y = -128
___________________
2x + 0 = 68
2x = 68
x = 34
x + y = 64
34 + y = 64
y = 30
There are 30 chickens.
So yeah. Boredom. Even that is better that what we did today. Hahaha. Math.
